Reconing a subwoofer

Materials for use in recone -
Drill with Phillips head bit
Soldiering iron with soilder
Bob Smith IC-2000 Tough Black Rubberized CA Glue - http://www.bsi-inc.com/Pages/hobby/ca.html
Bottle of Acetone
Bottle of Aircraft Paint Stripper Gel
Index cards bought at walmart
Recone kit of your choice

I didnt take any pictures of the really nasty part of the recone - stripping the sub.. This would of been just removing the old CA glue off of the basket. All I did to do this was buy some Aircraft paint stripper gel at Walmart and painted the chemical over the old crusty surround leftovers and let it sit overnight. In the morning, most of the material had bubbled up and a small metal wire brush was just used to abrasively clean off the black goo residue. I did NOT scrape, beat, or gouge the basket with a screwdriver or metal brush in order to get any of the material off. After stripper has been applied and let sit, the removal shouldnt be that hard to mechanically remove.

August 28 - eCrack.net Competition @ Audio Visionz

Since eCrack.net uses its own rules, we use the competitor's maximum SPL to classify the competitors. I'm going to list the scores as they appear on the sheets they were recorded on. I'm not sure if they are in any certain order.

Tim Colelosare 149.3

Nic "Red" Coleman 149.0

James Porter 143.2

Justin Pierce 143.0

Gerald Watkins 142.8

Jeffery Robbins 141.2

"Junior" Kuhns 141.2

Joey Chapman 130.0

Dough Seal 133.8

Daniel Lenevich 137.9

Justin Pierce

Gerald Watkins

Brandon Newbury

Jeffery Robbins

Junior

Class C:

In the Bass Race Style Competition, we had these results:

Class A:

Justin Pierce 140.4

James Porter 138.5

Brandon Newbury 138.2

Jeffery Robbins 136.7

Junior 132.3

Description of Controversy: The bass race category in the term lab software averages the bass in the range of 20hz to 80hz over a period of 30 seconds. For this reason, starting at the perfect moment is critical. The new term lab software starts the metering on "set" in the "ready-set-go" sequence. Because of this, most competitors practice this.

Gerald Watkins went on "set". The screen turned red saying he went too soon. It was my judgement call, and since my equipment was not behaving as normal, I decided not to penalize him for doing what he had practiced. Once I counted this score, The closest competitor started a huddle of people and they began complaining. It was then his turn to compete. He asked me about my ruling. I informed him 3 times that he too could go on "set". I placed the mic in his car and began to meter him. He went on "ready" which boosts your score more than going on "set". he scored a 142.1 and in the video is sounds like he played a test tone instead of music, which disqualifies you (the video is posted on youtube for clarification)(unfortunately, gerald's run was before the controversy broke out, and nobody had a camera on it.). I disqualified that run. He immediately began to complain and insist that Gerald had gone on "ready" as well. It was argued for a minute or two before I suggested they go again, they both got infinite tries to go and they would both go on the same sensor so that even the slightest of differences would be accurate. The competitor that complained chose to only go once. Gerald then went once, and got a slow start so that he would be sure not to red screen. He wanted to go again. I told them prior to this that they had infinite tries due to the discrepancy. He then achieved the score of 140.7 which beat the person who complained by .3db. The person who was beat continued to complain and was instructed that no further help would be given to him (I helped him all week preparing for this competition at no charge) and that he was no longer welcome to these competitions. He insisted that I allowed others to cheat, even though we redid the competition and he was beat fair and square. He has now vowed to say or do anything to ruin these competitions and the website. He has since sent me the "BassRace" rules for sanctioned events. In those rules it states that 2 red screen's disqualify the competitor from the event. Since both of the competitors red screened, it makes the argument null and void, but also Bass Race has their own classes and rules. My comps don't follow these rules, and it is stated on facebook and in every flyer. The appeal of these comps is we use our own classification system to make it more competitive for people who are not pro competitors.

eCrack.net was also accused of stealing the entry money. Each person who competes knows the pricing. We list the competitors on the site and on fb each time. From this information, and from the forum thread that keeps track of the money collected, you can know exactly how much money has been collected at any given time. It will be awarded to the winner/s at the end of the season in October.

How to get the most out your car stereo system part one: Amplifiers

In todays car audio world, there is a variety of stereo gear to choose from. The number of manufacturers are at an all time high and getting bigger. It is very important to choose wisely for the right gear to use especially if u plan on competing. Today I want to talk about the most important piece of equipment to have. The Amplifier. So how do they actually work? An amplifier amplifies the rca input signal from the head unit. That signal is too weak to even be heard through the system's subwoofers. Choosing the right amplifier to fill your needs can be tricky so you have to look for a few things when doing your search. The biggest misconception about amplifiers is its rated power. We see all type of amps that say they will do 3000 to 5000 watts. What some manufacturers fail to explain is that this rating is the amp's "peak power". Peak power is only good for a sudden burst of power that you cant even measure if it can be done at all. You must always rate an amplifier by RMS power only. Rms power is the power that an amp will put out continuous to your subwoofers. This will ensure that when properly matched to your subwoofer that they will get the ample headroom that they need. You never want to extremely underpower your subs. They need as much clean power as they can get. Also when looking at amplifiers, dont be fooled with so called 5000 watt amps that are about the size of a small power converter. I'm pretty sure that these amps will not do their rated power. You can also judge an amplifier by how much it weighs. I guarantee a true 5000 watt RMS amplifier will be pretty heavy and quite large. So when doing your list for your dream system make sure you take your time when searching for the best amplifier to fit your system.

What is this Site About?

I often wonder how many people search the internet every day for how to make their daily stereo louder so they can impress or humiliate their friends. I wonder how many people want to compete but just can't find that tidbit of information to give them an edge. I remember the magazines from years past that simply showed the competition builds, but didn't go into detail about HOW they did it. What is the THEORY or scientific law behind certain elements of your build? How many people understand that a port is actually a passive radiator?
Short of working to have mild success and becoming part of a competition team, there really hasn't been a good way to learn how to get loud.

Our SPL authors are going to single out specific details about Car Audio SPL or even the Car Audio Industry and give you the inside scoop. These guys have been around a long time and know exactly what to do and have the ability to articulate it in ways that can be understood by most.

We love Car Audio... Specifically the SPL side of things and are working to restore it to its former glory. To do this, we are providing you with the information necessary to improve your own install and enjoy success.

The satisfaction of setting out to do something and achieving it through exercising your own knowledge and skill is unparalleled. Whether you just want to feel that deep bass when you listen or you just love to see your score higher than the person in the lane next to you, it will be made easier for you to accomplish by reading what our authors have to say here.

We WILL be the ultimate resource for Car Audio SPL.

Please join, read, and feel free to ask questions.
